Are you registered to vote?

Who is eligible to register to vote?

  • Aged 17 or over (17 years olds and some 16 year olds can register to vote but may not vote until they are 18)

  • A British citizen, citizen of the Republic of Ireland or qualifying Commonwealth citizen who has leave to enter and remain in the UK or does not require such leave.  The definition of a Commonwealth citizen includes citizens of British Crown Dependencies and British Overseas Territories.

  • A citizen of other European Union (EU) member state can vote in the UK at local government elections only.

You will need to provide the following information when you apply:

  • name, current and previous address, nationality, date of birth and national insurance number

If you are unable to register online, you can request a paper registration form or complete the registration over the phone by contacting the electoral services team on 01476 406080.

Special category electors

Special provision is made to enable certain groups to register to vote even though they may live or work overseas or have no permanent address at which to register. These are known as special category electors.
