Heritage of Flight - Airfields of South Lincolnshire

South Lincolnshire has a proud and colourful wartime aviation heritage, from WWI through WWII and into the Cold War. With 2014 as the 70th anniversary of airborne offensives supporting D-Day and Arnhem, we have paid homage to history-making allied airborne efforts from local airfields.

Our publications record airfield sites and histories with personal stories across the years as a published legacy.

Watch our video harking back to the eve of D-Day with American Pathfinder paratroopers flying from RAF North Witham (known today as Twyford Woods near Colsterworth)  and one of the great untold stories of the war - the mid-air training collision over Lincolnshire that killed seven combat decorated veterans and Major Jerry, the pilot's Dalmatian dog and canine forces celebrity.

Our proposed Ninth Air Force Trail will celebrate the role of America's 9th Troop Carrier Command during 1944.

We hope that our 'Heritage of Flight' publications inspire imaginations and encourage people to ponder the history on our doorstep. Personal stories from local people reflect deep abiding memories from another era - and the huge debt of thanks owed to service personnel from across the globe who served here.
