Eight new electric vehicle charge points are now available for use in a popular Stamford car park.
The South Kesteven District Council-operated Cattle Market Car Park, off Station Road, Stamford, is partnering Swarco Smart Charging to bring them into use.
The council dedicated £42,687 of its Climate Change Reserve to fund the installation, commissioning and maintenance of four 22kW Evolve chargers, each offering convenient charging for two vehicles.
The new charging infrastructure builds on the Council’s existing 12 charge points that were installed in car parks owned by SKDC in 2020. More information on these can be found online: https://www.southkesteven.gov.uk/climatenews/electric-vehicle-charging-south-kesteven
Cabinet Member for Property, Cllr Richard Cleaver, said: “This improvement demonstrates SKDC’s commitment to investing in technology which will benefit of residents and visitors.
"We already have electric vehicles in our fleet and continue to upgrade the infrastructure to support the use of zero emission vehicles and help reduce transport-related pollution.”
Cabinet Member for Environment, Cllr Rhys Baker, added: "We remain committed to improving our environment and this is a step further on a long journey to make our district cleaner and greener."
Vehicle transport is highlighted as one of the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions in the UK.
In 2020, the Government made the headline commitment to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars and this Zero Emission Vehicle Mandate will require all new cars and vans to be fully zero emission from 2035, confirming the role of EVs in decarbonising road transport.
SKDC’s Climate Action Strategy, confirms the ambition of the Council to ensure South Kesteven has a high-quality network of EV charging points that meets the needs of residents, businesses and visitors alike.
The Council remains committed to enhancing charge point accessibility in South Kesteven, increasing its provision of EV charging infrastructure to benefit all.
In many cases, an EV is cheaper to run than a petrol or diesel car, with lower ongoing maintenance and repair costs. Projections indicate a substantial rise in EV adoption, which will require infrastructure development from both the public and private sectors.
Other EV charging points operated by SKDC are at:
- Welham Street Car Park (Level 2), Grantham - 4 chargers (7kW AC)
- North Street Car Park, Stamford – 4 chargers (14kW AC)
- Community Centre Car Park, Market Deeping – 2 chargers (22kW AC)
- Burghley Street Car Park, Bourne – 2 chargers (22kW AC)
