How you can help make South Kesteven more age friendly

Groups supporting the over 50s in South Kesteven are being asked how the district can become more age friendly.

South Kesteven District Council wants to better understand what can be done in the future to help older people lead happier lives.

The current step is for anyone with a role in supporting the over 50s to fill in a survey, Age Friendly Communities - Community Groups and Organisations Survey which will help underpin that understanding.

Questions relate to housing provision, connectivity, opportunities to socialise, the services available, and the perception of how age friendly South Kesteven is.

This follows the council being accepted into the UK Network of Age Friendly Communities in April this year.

SKDC wants to ensure the district is a place that enables people to age well and live a good later life - somewhere that people can remain in their homes, participate in the activities they value, and contribute to their communities, for as long as possible.

Responses will be analysed after the deadline of 12pm on Friday 12th September, and then a second survey will be circulated to residents asking what it is like to live, work and age in the district.

An action plan will then be drawn up to deliver further support.

SKDC’s Cabinet Member for Property and Public Engagement, Cllr Richard Cleaver said that South Kesteven, like many other places, has an ageing population.

“It is vital that we provide an environment in which people can grow old well and feel supported,” he said.

“Feeling disconnected from society can have an adverse effect on people’s mental and physical health.

“Being able to grow old well and live an independent life relies on an individual’s personal capability and also the social and physical environments in which they live.

“Ensuring the district provides a supportive environment can play a key role in assisting older residents to maintain activity levels and their independence for longer.

“Many of the groups that work with the over 50s we will already be aware of and will have contacted directly, but there will be others out there quietly working away behind the scenes that we aren’t, and we are keen to involve everyone is this landmark project.”

SKDC is partnering with the six other Lincolnshire district councils and the Lincolnshire Health and Wellbeing Board to provide a county-wide response to the opportunities and

challenges presented by ageing, offering opportunities to share best practice and learning.

The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination based on a range of characteristics, one of which is age.

More than 30 million people in the UK now live in Age Friendly Communities. The Centre for Ageing Better works with the network to provide guidance, connect places and offer support to member communities.

The UK Network is part of a global movement led by the World Health Organisation.
