French market adds sparkle

Grantham Market Place was a hive of activity on Saturday as a French-themed Brocante opened up for business.

The Brocante, which translates from French to a flea market, offered artisan goods, jewellery, artwork, ceramics, vintage wares and antiques to shoppers.

There was also street entertainment with French music and the Rhubarb Theatre Company who appeared as a French chef and hopelessly slow-moving snails.

Coffees were served from a barista van named Henri that also offered outdoor seating, despite the rain.

South Kesteven District Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Paul Stokes, said: “I was very pleased to be able to get along to this event, which saw French flair alongside a dogged British determination not to be beaten by the weather in what was a great day for Grantham Market.

“The Brocante was very well attended, which gave an extra boost to our already-successful Saturday market, which SKDC has invested heavily in, with time, ideas and money.

“I’d like to thank everybody involved with making the event such a success and the shoppers who came out to support our efforts to make Grantham Market Place a thriving community hub through the addition of varied and different events. Until the next time, ‘À bientôt’!”

Trader Alison Jenks, of La Chaumiere, lived in France and much of her stock was acquired during her time there or from Newark’s International Antique and Collectors Fair.

“I think this is a really great place to have an event like this,” she said: “It’s brought people down here and that’s despite the highly unpredictable British weather!”
