Flag raising launches Victory in Europe Day in Grantham

The VE Day flag is flying over St Peters Hill in Grantham to commemorate 80 years since the end of the war in Europe.

Echoing national celebrations, the South Kesteven District Council flag raising was attended by past and serving military and guests, elected members, Royal British Legion, council officers, representatives of the Kings School Combined Cadet Force and members of Grantham Town Council.

South Kesteven District Council Chairman Cllr Paul Fellows spoke of the importance of marking VE Day and what the end of hostilities meant to those who had suffered years of war.

Prince William of Gloucester Barracks Head of Establishment Lt Col Duncan Lowe spoke of the district’s proud airborne heritage, mentioning the invaluable contribution to the end of the war of airborne forces who trained locally and flew from local airfields to fight in Normandy for D-Day and The Netherlands for Arnhem in 1944.

He also recognised the importance and local contribution of the Home Guard.

Father Stuart Cradduck of St Wulfram’s Church said a prayer of thanksgiving and RBL Grantham Chairman Clive Cooper read part of the Poem for the Fallen.

The Last Post and Reveille were played by a Kings School Combined Cadet Force representative and the flag was raised by CCF cadets Oliver Wix and Arron Shelbourn. The ceremony concluded with singing of the National Anthem.
