Calling amateur photographers, artists and graphic designers

As part of marking what would have Margaret Thatcher's 100th birthday, South Kesteven District Council is working with Union Street Gallery to run a Design a Grantham Postcard event.

The Council is one of several collaborators on the commemorative project, which covers history, conflict and the divisive politics of her time in power.

The art event aims to unleash the artistic vision of the public to go on display as part of a free new exhibition at the Gallery, a century after the birth of Britain's first female Prime Minister.

All entries will be displayed in the exhibition from Monday 1st October to mid-November as part of events and activities marking the Centenary, when Union Street Gallery in Grantham will exhibit a diverse collection of Thatcher postcards, covering all aspects of her often controversial story.

But it needs public input from fresh, new designs. Submitted postcards can be on any theme related to Grantham, whether it’s history, architecture, nature, events or people, or even something else.

Cllr Paul Stokes, South Kesteven District Council's Cabinet Member for Arts and Culture, who is also Deputy Leader of the Council, said: "We really would like to see a huge celebration of Grantham expressed through this art project.

"There is so much here to celebrate: from our award-winning green parks to our thriving factories and the surrounding farmland. We have historic architecture, some imposing historical figures such as Isaac Newton and Mrs Thatcher herself, galleries, local sports clubs, our famous gingerbread and plenty more to provide inspiration."

Postcards can be designed in any medium – a scenic photograph, painting or watercolour, or digitally designed.

They should be in standard postcard size 148mm x 105mm (A6).

The design template via the website www.guildhallartscentre.com should be used. It includes a small form to fill in. From 1st-31st October, you can pick up a paper copy of the template, or stay at the Gallery at the community table to complete your design there

Your design can handed in to Union Street Gallery, NG31 6NZ, anytime between Monday 22nd September and 31st October to feature as part of a bigger exhibition.
