Deadline for candidates to stand for election to the new Grantham parish council

Candidates for upcoming parish council election for Grantham must act now to be on the ballot paper.

Completed nomination papers must be submitted before 4pm on Friday 5th April.

This is an opportunity for people to put themselves forward to represent their community in one of 22 seats on the new council across seven wards, covering all parts of Grantham. The election is on Thursday 2nd May.

Information packs and nomination papers are available from the SKDC website at www.southkesteven.gov.uk/elections2024 where full details of the elections, advice and background information can also be found.

Candidates can also get in contact with the SKDC Elections Team who are on hand to explain the application process, answer any questions and informally check nominations papers ahead of submission.

Karen Bradford, Chief Executive and Returning Officer for the district, said: “To be completed, the nomination papers need to be signed by an eligible proposer and seconder, who must both be registered local government electors in the ward.

“Our Elections Team can explain the application process further and answer any questions candidates may have.”

Forms must be hand delivered to the office of the Returning Officer, South Kesteven House, St Peter's Hill, Grantham, NG31 6PZ. Appointments to deliver papers – and requests to check them over before submission – should be booked by emailing nominations@southkesteven.gov.uk The team is also contactable on 01476 406080.

The decision to create a new parish council for Grantham followed the completion of a Community Governance Review. Although the new Council is called a Parish Council, it is likely that the new Council would choose to call itself a Town Council – although this would be for the new Parish Council to resolve.

With only a few weeks remaining before the Grantham Parish Council election and voting for a Lincolnshire Police and Crime Commissioner on the same day, eligible residents who wish to vote should ensure they are registered to do so before the deadline.

Applications to register to vote must reach the Electoral Registration Officer by 12 midnight on Tuesday 16 April 2024. Applications can be made online: www.gov.uk/register-to-vote

All voters are now required to show an accepted form of photographic identification at a polling station before they are given a ballot paper. Full details can be found at www.southkesteven.gov.uk/voterid

SKDC can assist those without valid photo ID by supplying a Voter Authority Certificate. The deadline for this is 5pm on Wednesday 24 April. Applications for a Voter Authority Certificate can be made online: www.gov.uk/apply-for-photo-id-to-vote More details are available by calling 01476 406080 or emailing elections@southkesteven.gov.uk

Residents unable to cast their vote on May 2nd can apply for a postal or proxy vote. This method does not require voter ID.
