Young people invited to help shape their local area

The views of young people will help to shape local government in South Kesteven as applications open for the South Kesteven Youth Council.

Formed by South Kesteven District Council, it will give the younger generation the platform to voice their opinions and shape positive change in their communities.

It follows work by a steering group set up in July and made up of representatives from schools in Grantham who decided how the youth council will operate going forwards.

Cllr Rhea Rayside, Cabinet Member for People and Communities, said: “The voices of young people across our District are valuable in helping to shape the local area and the delivery of key services.

“Youth Councillors represent our future generation so we look forward to amplifying their voices as we welcome more passionate young people into the Chamber.

“Following some fantastic work by the steering group, I am certain the Youth Council will become an exciting avenue for young individuals to not only express their views but to play an active part in local government.”

Following a vote in July, the steering group decided on three key priorities: mental health, the environment, and entrepreneurship.

In-person meetings held every two months in the Council Chamber in the Grantham will give the young councillors the chance to share their views and help action positive change.

They’ll also help to consult on policy by reviewing reports and talking to policy makers.

As well as actively participating in local government issues and decision-making processes, they’ll get the chance to meet and collaborate with peers from across South Kesteven and gain valuable transferrable skills.

The Youth Council is open for those aged between 11 and 19 who live or study in South Kesteven.

Those interested in applying to join the Youth Council must submit an application online by visiting https://forms.office.com/e/06DiqYdm8i. The deadline for applications is 10th January 2024.

Successful applicants will be asked to meet on 29th January 2024 in the Council Chamber in Grantham. Full details will be shared with those selected to join.
