Dangerous dogs

It's against the law to own certain types of dog

The breeds of dogs banned are the:

  • Pit Bull Terrier
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Fila Brasiliero

It is also against the law to:

  • sell a banned dog
  • abandon a banned dog
  • give away a banned dog
  • breed from a banned dog

However, any dog may be considered to be dangerous under the Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. An offence is committed by the owner of the dog and by any other person in charge of it at the time, if the dog is dangerously out of control. A more serious offence will be committed if the dog injures a person while out of control.

If you are concerned about a dangerous dog, contact Lincolnshire Police on 999 (if it is an emergency) or on 101 (if you are not in immediate danger). Visit https://www.gov.uk/control-dog-public/banned-dogs for more on banned and dangerous dogs.
