To find out more about your Council Tax, including why the amount of Council Tax you pay is more than this, how the amount of Council Tax you pay in South Kesteven compares to other areas in the country and why SKDC always refers to Band D properties, see below.
Why is the amount of council tax I pay so much more than this?
- The amount of council tax you pay will include charges from Lincolnshire County Council, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Lincolnshire and your town or parish council for services they provide. SKDC collects council tax on behalf of each of these organisations, keeping around nine percent of what is collected to fund the services we provide.
- The amount of Council Tax you pay will also depend on the banding of the property you live in. If the increase of 2.99% is approved by South Kesteven District Council on 26th February 2026 , households with properties in Bands A, B or C will see the district council element of their bill increase on average by less than £5.66, those in Bands E, F, G or H will see an average increase of more than £5.66 but no more than £11.32.
The graphic below illustrates the impact of an increase of 2.99% per year ( Band D Property) on SKDC’s element of Council Tax for 2026/27, for households in Bands A, D and H. Households in other bands would see the part of their bill relating to SKDC increase by a proportion related to this amount.

Why is the amount of Council Tax always expressed as the charge for a Band D property?
The amount of Council Tax we levy is always expressed as a Band D figure because it is the standard benchmark used for comparison and calculation purposes across all local authorities in England and Wales. The charges for all other bands (A through H) are then set as a fixed proportion of the Band D charge.
How does the amount of council tax I pay compare to other areas?
The amount of Council Tax we levy remains low, when compared to other shire councils across the country.

Why does the amount of council tax I pay depend on where I live in the district?
The amount of council tax you will pay will also vary depending on where you live and the services provided by your local town or parish council. The plans and obligations your town or parish council has for your local area, and how many households the area includes will also have an impact.
Does the amount of council tax I pay depend on who I live with?
Yes, it does. The amount of council tax you pay will also depend on who you live with. If you live on your own, you may be entitled to a single person’s discount of 25%. If you live with someone who is “disregarded” for council tax purposes e.g. they are a full-time student, student nurse or an apprentice, you may be entitled to a reduction of 25%.
What else might affect the amount of council tax I pay?
The amount of council tax you pay will also depend on any benefits you are claiming. If you are on a low income and are eligible for various benefits including universal credit, income support or pension credit, you may be entitled to council tax support.
