The purpose of this consultation was to find out which design local people would prefer for the sculpture to commemorate the First World War in Wyndham Park.
Summary of actions
College students were asked to design a sculpture for Wyndham Park. They were asked to reflect the links the park has with the First World War and also those Grantham has with the Machine Gun Corps. Four designs were shortlisted and local people were asked to choose one.
Displays were set up in the Isaac Newton Shopping Centre and in Wyndham Park on Friday May 16th and Saturday May 17th 2014. People were able to view the designs and choose their favourite.
364 local people voted for their favourite with the majority (122) choosing a design inspired by the Machine Gun Corps. The design features two guns, a crown and a religious cross with a soldier's hat on each representing different aspects of mourning and memorial.
A local sculptor was commissioned to bring the design to life. The design was unveiled on the 100th anniversary of Captain Wyndham's death - 6th November 2014. View photos on our Flickr account >>
