Scrap metal dealers

Anyone who collects or buys scrap metal needs a licence.

The Scrap Metal Dealers Act 2013 requires that any persons collecting or buying scrap metal in South Kesteven requires a Scrap Metal Dealer Licence issued by us. Please download an application form and guidance below.

Applicants must satisfy us that they are a legitimate trader and a suitable person to carry on a scrap metal business. Applicants are also required to produce a basic criminal records check  - available from Disclosure Scotland by telephoning 0870 609 6006 or through the Disclosure Scotland website >>

Sellers of metal must carry proper identification for the dealer to retain. Applicants will also require a Waste Carrier Licence that is issued by the Environment Agency.

Dealer licence
Required where a business operates in scrap metal at a premises. A site manager will be required to be named for each site. The licensee will then be permitted to operate from that site as a scrap metal dealer including transporting to and from those sites from any local authority area.
£564 for a three year licence and £534 for a renewal thereafter.
Collector's licence
This authorises the licensee to operate as a mobile collector in the area of the issuing local authority, permitting them to collect scrap metal as appropriate. This includes commercial as well as domestic scrap metal. If a mobile collector operates within more than one local authority's district, a licence will be required for each authority that (s)he operates in.
£147 for a three year licence and £117 for a renewal thereafter.
