Rent Deposit Loan Scheme

We operate a rent deposit loan scheme to help people who are homeless, or threatened with homelessness, access homes in the private rented sector.

To qualify for the scheme you must:

How it works

When moving into a new home in the private rented sector it is likely that the landlord will ask you for a deposit and the first months rent in advance. If you are homeless, or threatened with homelessness, then we may be able to help in a number of ways.

1. We can provide your prospective landlord with a bond instead of the usual cash deposit. The bond is a guarantee to the landlord that, at the end of the tenancy, we will pay for any damages (up to an agreed amount) caused by the tenant. If we pay any costs to the landlord then you would be expected to pay these back to the council.

2. If the landlord is unwilling to accept a bond, we may agree to give you the money needed for the deposit by way of an interest-free loan. You would need to pay the loan back in regular instalments over a maximum of 12 months.

3. If you also need help with the first months rent in advance, we may be able to pay the money to the landlord by way of an interest-free loan. Again, you would need to pay back the loan in regular instalments over a maximum of 12 months.

All applications for the scheme are subject to affordability checks to make sure that we help people into homes that they can afford on an ongoing basis.
