Touring play brings homelessness to life
'Until It's Gone' gets students thinking.
Entertaining, funny and very informative, that's the verdict of local school students on a play about homelessness.
Supported by eight councils, including SKDC, and performed by Zest Creative Arts, 'Until it's Gone' is a hard-hitting look at the issues around youth homelessness.
When they were creating the script, Zest visited a number of housing projects to get real insights into the life experiences of young homeless people. Many of the incidents in the play were based directly on real-life stories.
The company performed to nine schools in our district – St Hugh's C of E Mathematics & Computing College, Ambergate School, Walton Girls' High School, and The Central Technology and Sports College all in Grantham, Bourne Grammar School and The Robert Manning College in Bourne, Stamford Queen Eleanor School, The Charles Read High School in Corby Glen and The Aveland High School in Billingborough.
The feedback from students revealed they now had a much stronger awareness of homelessness and the different reasons why people find themselves on the streets. At the end of the performance, the students had the opportunity to ask the characters questions about their situation.
Housing Solutions manager Kev Martin said: "I am really pleased that the play struck a chord with so many young people, and highlighted how easy it can be to find yourself homeless.
"The feedback from the students was extremely positive, and this is certainly something we would look to get involved with again."
