Litter and Street Cleansing
Keeping South Kesteven tidy
Litter costs local authorities in England and Wales about £450 million every year to clean up. It looks unsightly, can attract rats and other rodents and even poses a public health hazard. We want to keep South Kesteven as free of litter and refuse as possible and therefore we provide more than 500 litter bins across the district. Most are in town centres and parks. Shops and retail outlets often provide their own litter bins, as do some parish and town councils. Some parish councils have community litter pickers who work with us.
Some 40% of all litter dropped is smoking related, with 122 tonnes of cigarette ends dropped EVERY DAY in England and Wales - that's enough to fill 11 bin lorries! Drink, confectionery and fast-food litter follow close behind.
Tell us about a litter problem
If you see a litter bin that is overflowing, or any other litter problem, you can report it online or contact Customer Services on 01476 40 62 79.
Penalties
Our officers can issue a Fixed Penalty Notice for £75 to anyone found dropping or leaving litter in a public place and on certain private property, such as car parks or open spaces with public access. You can also receive a fixed penalty notice for throwing litter from a vehicle. If this is paid within a statutory period of 14 days, offenders can avoid prosecution, which could lead to a fine of up to £1,000.

Street Cleansing
In addition to removing litter, we also clean streets throughout the district to remove any other material (such as silt, fallen leaves, cigarette ends etc.) that has accumulated.
This cleaning is carried out to a schedule to ensure that everyone receives an equitable service as far as possible, although one or two "grotspots" receive special attention to protect both the local community and the general environment.
