Bowls club members refocus as 'buddies'

Bowls players turned their talents to community volunteering and support after Coronavirus restrictions stopped them playing their favourite sport.

Members of Bourne Town Bowls club wasted no time before swinging into action after the decision was made to halt play to comply with social distancing and lockdown restrictions.

The change of tack is a clear sign of how the club is part of the community, according to chairman David Ashby.

He said: "We created a 'buddy' arrangement where members can have some communication with someone outside of their four walls. Even talking to family and friends is not easy at the moment and for some people, very lonely, so we wanted to offer members an opportunity to have a chat with someone.

"We also contacted all our members and made sure that no one was in need of basic needs, like food and drink and medical supplies.

"We have some experienced gardeners so put a shout out to them, asking for content to go in our regular newsletter. We've shared lots of hints and tips on how to make the most of your garden while we are all restricted to our homes."
