Special Collections

Introduction

We have a duty to collect rubbish from householders in South Kesteven. This means that we collect your recycling and landfill rubbish from you.

People throughout the district have different needs and we try to make the service we deliver fair to all. For example, there are some people who cannot get their rubbish out for collection because of ill health, and we therefore run an assisted collection scheme so that they receive the same service as everyone else.

This section looks at these special collections.

Assisted collections

What is the assisted collection scheme?

For residents of the district who are physically or mentally unable to get their rubbish ready for the collection, we offer them help so that they don’t miss out on their collections.

How can I get help?

Please complete the attached application form (online form link). You will need to get a signature from someone who knows why you need the help.

Will my collections change?

Your day of collection stays the same, all that is different is that the collection staff will collect your rubbish from where you store it and if needed, return the bin to the same place.

Medical waste

What is medical waste?

If you have a medical condition which means that you have extra rubbish because of it (such as dressings) this is medical waste.

How is medical waste collected?

We provide you with an extra black wheelie bin or double the supply of pink bags.

How do I get my extra bin or bags?

We deliver the bin or bags to you after we have received a letter from a doctor or nurse that can clarify that you have a need for the extra bin or bags.

Collections from churches, village halls and other community halls

What collections do you make from these premises?

We make collections from churches, village halls, community centres and cemeteries as part of the household rubbish collections. They are collected the same as household rubbish in the area.

Will these premises get bins?

We have found that these premises tend to make a lot of rubbish one week and nothing the next. Therefore we have decided to provide the twin bag system for these premises rather than the wheelie bins. With this system, you can place out as many pink or clear bags you have to have collected on the appropriate week.

These premises will receive the same allocation of bags as other households, 104 pink bags and 104 clear bags per year. These give you the same space as if you had wheelie bins.

If you run out of bags before the next delivery of them, we will provide more to you at a charge. If you need more bags, please complete the online form to request them. We will then contact you with details about the charges for these.

Where will the bags be delivered to?

We will arrange to deliver the bags to the premise itself unless we are asked to deliver them elsewhere. If you want to register yourself as the point of delivery for a premise, please complete our online form.

Bulky item collections

What is a bulky item collection?

These are special collections of household furniture and electrical appliances. It is a collection of those items that cannot be collected through the normal rubbish collections.

Is there anything that can’t be collected as a bulky item?

We only collect household furniture and electrical appliances, including fridges and freezers. We do not collect anything which was once a fixture or fitting, such as bathroom suites, doors, kitchen units etc.

If you are unsure about if an item can be collected, please contact the helpline 01476 406279 or fill in our online query form.

What happens to the items you collect?

At the moment they are all taken for landfill, with the exception of fridges and freezers which are recycled.

If you have an item which you think can be reused by someone else, please contact one of the local charities or reuse centres who may be able to find your item a new worthy home. They may even be able to make a collection free of charge from you. Click here for a list of local charities and reuse centres.

How much is it for the collection?

We charge £10 for the first item and £5 per item thereafter, unless it is a fridge or freezer, and then these are charged at £10 each. This is because these have to undergo special treatment for their safe recycling.

For example:

  1. If you have one fridge and one sofa, this is £20 (£10 +£10)
  2. If you have one fridge, a chair and table, this is £25 (£10+£10+£5)
  3. If you have a dining table and four chairs, this is £30 (£10+£5+£5+£5+£5)

Do you tell me when my items are going to be collected?

We telephone you the day before the collection is made so that you have the chance to get the items ready for the collection. This is usually between 5-7 working days after we have received your payment.

Where do you collect the items from?

The items need to be outside ready for the collection by 7.30am on the morning we say we are coming. If you have a problem with this, please explain your situation when we call you to arrange the collection.

How do I arrange a collection?

Please complete our online form to make the payment and give us details of the collection.

What can I expect from the council?

As we have rolled out the new alternate weekly collection service there have been changes to the way that your rubbish is dealt with. As part of this change, you may feel that we are asking more of you, and yet you do not know what you will receive in return.

Below are the Street Scene standards that we aim to achieve:
