Recycling and composting

Introduction

Recycling and composting are becoming more important each day, and it is also becoming more important to the people living here in South Kesteven. This is why we are working to make recycling and composting as easy as possible for you.

Please look at the Using your silver bin or clear bags for information about the recycling collections we make from you.

In this section we look at recycling banks, green wheelie bins and home composting.

We need to make arrangements to slow down the flow of garden waste and other organic materials (such as peelings etc) being sent to landfill. Though these materials compost down, in reality they can’t do this in a landfill site. Once they are squashed underneath all the other rubbish, air cannot access it. Instead of composting, methane is produced, a powerful greenhouse gas which contributes to global warming.

Garden waste

How do I get rid of my garden rubbish?

You have a couple of options for the disposal of your garden waste:

  1. Use the Household Waste Recycling Centres in Grantham and Bourne
  2. Buy or make a home composter. We have a special offer on these so why not make a start on making your own compost
  3. Request a green wheelie bin from us. There is a waiting list but we will get in touch with you as soon as a bin is available for you

I already have a green wheelie bin, can I have another?

Unfortunately at the moment we are unable to offer everyone wanting their first green wheelie bin one, so we cannot guarantee that second bins will be available. Please complete our online form to be added to the list of existing users for a second wheelie bin.

I don’t want to take my garden waste to the sites nor have a green wheelie bin, what can I do?

Get a home composter and make use of the waste yourself.

We have a great offer available for getting your own home composter. Contact the order line online or call 0845 077 0757. Quote reference HCA1 for your discount.

We will also send out to you help about how to make the most of the compost you make with your new composter, so there’s no reason to not have a go!

I already have a home composter, but I can’t get it to work properly…

We have got an information book available to people who already have a composter but need some tips on making usable compost for their garden. You can request a booklet by completing our online form.

I have a green wheelie bin, what can I put in it?

You should have received an information leaflet about the wheelie bins and what you can put in it.

Yes please

  1. All grass cuttings
  2. Hedge and shrub cuttings
  3. Raw fruit and vegetable waste (peelings etc)
  4. Weeds and dead flowers (do not worry if they have been treated)

No thank you

  1. Cooked food
  2. Bread
  3. Paper or card
  4. Soil or soil pods
  5. Rubble
  6. Animal bedding or animal excrement
  7. Egg shells or tea bags

Why can’t I put things in the green wheelie bin that I could compost at home?

The law about composting is very tight after the experiences learnt from the Foot and Mouth outbreak. We cannot allow anything that may have come into contact with animal products into the green wheelie bins, as the compost made from it is used on agricultural land. Your compost will mainly be used on your garden and is not under the same strict guidelines.

I have a green wheelie bin, can I get the compost back?

We are still trying to make arrangements for compost to be made available to those people contributing towards it. Unfortunately we do not have the means to sell this back to you at the moment, but if this changes, we will contact you all.

What happens if my bin gets stolen or broken?

Contact the helpline on 01476 406279 or complete our online form to arrange for repairs to be made or for your bin to be replaced.

Recycling banks

Where is my nearest recycling bank?

My local bank is very busy, when is it emptied?

Recycling banks are emptied as often as they need it. If you find a problem at any site, please let us know by completing our online form.

As more banks are being placed in the district, we are reworking the emptying schedule. This will be available online very soon.

As recycling collections are extended to people at home will the recycling banks be taken away?

No, we know that a lot of people like using the banks and that they will continue to use them even when they have recycling collections at home. We do think that they will be used less, and if we are requested by a parish council to have a bank removed we will investigate if there is a need for it to be there anymore.

I think that our village / area of town could have a recycling bank, how do we get one?

Ask your parish council or the owner of the land to see if they think that others would like the bank too. They can then apply to us for a bank by filling in our online request form, and we will investigate to see if we can help.

What day are my green wheelie bin collections?

Click here to find out when your collections are.

Where do I place my bin or bags for the collection?

They need to be placed in the same place as your rubbish for collection.

What are the rules of the green wheelie bin collections?

Life is full of rules isn’t it? All those do’s and don’ts. However in most cases the rules are essential because they simply make it clear how to do things. It also means that there’s not one rule for one and one rule for another. It’s the same for everyone.

And it’s no different with our new collection system, so please bear with us, especially as we’ve done all we possibly can to keep the number of those dreaded – but necessary – rules to an absolute minimum.

  • Bins need to be placed at the edge of your property nearest the roadside for collection where it can be clearly seen
  • Please make sure that your bin is ready for collection by 7.30am on the morning of your collection.
  • Please make sure that the lid is fully closed. Our lifting equipment can damage the bins if the lid isn’t closed fully
  • Try not to overfill the bin. If you try to push too much into the bin we may not be able to get everything out of the bin or it may be too heavy to lift

There they are – just a few simple rules. If you have any problems, please let us know by phoning 01476 406360 or complete the online form.

I struggle with the green wheelie bin, can I have help?

We run an assisted collection service for people with disabilities who struggle with getting their rubbish for the collection. If you think that you would benefit from this service, please complete our online form.

Why have you stopped collecting green bags?

It is organic waste going into landfill which causes methane to be produced and released into the atmosphere. This needs to stop! Methane is a powerful greenhouse gas which plays a role in global warming, and this is why the European Union has set strict limits on how much organic waste we can put into landfill. Exceeding these limits will mean that we face hefty fines.

The green sacks were used for the collection of garden waste but were disposed of into landfill. With the new scheme, we want to make sure that the likelihood of EU fines are reduced, and we are working to offer other options for you to dispose of your garden waste.

What can I expect from the council?

As we have rolled out the new alternate weekly collection service there have been changes to the way that your rubbish is dealt with. As part of this change, you may feel that we are asking more of you, and yet you do not know what you will receive in return.

Below are the Street Scene standards that we aim to achieve:

Recycling banks
  1. We will provide recycling banks through the district to areas where enthusiasm has been shown
  2. We will only place banks in locations where we feel that they will be most benefit to the community
  3. Banks will be emptied according to a schedule
  4. If a bank is overflowing, we will empty it within 36 hours of being told
  5. Recycling around the banks will be collected when the banks are emptied, but we will always consider the circumstances, and if banks are not full, we will investigate this as flytipping
  6. We will keep recycling banks local to the community
  7. Banks and the site will be kept clean and free litter, graffiti and mess to the best of our ability
  8. Banks will be withdrawn if it is felt that they are causing a detrimental impact to the local area
  9. We will continue to try and get a better range of items that can be collected through the banks
Garden Waste Disposal
  1. We will continue to support the subsidised sale of home composters (please contact us for information about this)We will encourage home composters to be used for garden waste disposal
  2. We will advise you of other ways of disposing of your garden waste
  3. We will continue to operate our green wheelie bin service to those already with bins
  4. People wanting to join the green wheelie bin scheme will be added to a waiting list and contacted as soon there is availability on the scheme
